Limpopo FF+ member, Marcelle Maritz faces racist charges

The Democratic Alliance (DA) announced on Wednesday that they will be laying criminal charges against Limpopo Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader, Marcelle Maritz who was allegedly caught on camera using the K-word.

The FF Plus have also stated they will investigate the allegations against the former DA councillor.

Maritz who resigned from the DA in 2015, has denied the incident happened five years ago as allegedly stated.

According to DA MP Beyers Smit, the timestamp on the three-minute video, in which Maritz refers to the APK Church as “the church without {k-word}s” is actually dated two years ago.

In the cellphone recorded video a lady, purportedly Maritz, jokingly describes herself as a churchgoer to another two ladies, neither of whom can be seen and one of which is doing the recording.

In Afrikaans a second woman asks if she is referring to the Protestant Church (APK) to which the woman responds in the derogatory manner.

Smit and DA member Geoffrey Tshibvumo told the Sowetan they are taking the matter seriously and will be opening a criminal case against Maritz as they are appalled that she would make such a statement about a place of worship, the incident constitutes crimen injuria.

The incident has also been reported to the South African Human Rights Commission and the DA have requested that the Limpopo legislature’s ethics committee conduct an investigation.

Maritz was previously accused of a racial slur

Acting Community Services Manager for the Mogalakwena Municipality, Jabu Mashamaite recently accused Maritz of using a derogatory term during an altercation where she also threatened to fight him until death.

Maritz has been advised by her lawyers not to comment publicly regarding the allegations.
