Medical waste fire on 7th floor of Addington Hospital

Durban’s Addington Hospital paediatric and neo-natal units were evacuated on Tuesday when a fire broke out on the 7th floor of the building.

According to IOL photographs of the scene appear as if medical waste and general refuse which was piled up along the walls where it was stored.

Durban Fire Department Divisional Commander Adam Merasi said they were awaiting a full report into what caused the incident.

There were three fire trucks on scene and no injuries were reported.

In October 20018 the Department of Health (DOH) reported that fires had broken out on the 7th and 10th floor of the hospital near the fire escape routes where piles  of garbage filled plastic bags had been kept for collection.

It is thought that both fires were started in the same manor which is pointing to acts of sabotage.

This is a developing story.
