Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has announced that a forensic investigation is underway into allegations of the misappropriation of funds by the city’s development agency who is responsible for the Alexandra Renewal Project.
The project came under the spotlight following the protests over housing issues and has revealed possible corruption.
Mashaba has closed the project due to the lack of financial assistance and the matter has been presented to the Human Rights Commission.
The major says the matter will be discussed in Parliament in the same way as Nkandla was.
Gauteng MEC for Human Settlement Lebongang Maile has been questioned as to where the R1.3-billion has been allocated and denied having benefited from the project.
The Alex Renewal Project was launched in 2001 by former president Thabo Mbeki.
Maile has confirmed that he has opened a case against the Gauteng Economic Freedom Fighters leader Madisa Mashego after he publicly accused the MEC of benefiting from the project.
