Metro FM listeners are outraged that SABC ‘unscheduled’ DJ Fresh, whose real name is Thato Sikwane, from his breakfast show, and with many are demanding his return the Twitter tag ‘#BringBackDJFresh’ has been trending.
SABC spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu declined to elaborate on the details regarding the suspension as the matter is between DJ Fresh and the organisation.
There have been speculations that it was due to a clash between Fresh and his co-host Relebongile Mabotja as well as the allegations that he used offensive language on air.
According to IOL, during an interview with actress Khanya Mkangisa on May 20 DJ Fresh was heard using the word ‘msunery’ when responding to a listeners comment.
The word ‘msunery’ is taken from an isiZulu swear word ‘msunu’ which loosely means a**hole.
During the interview, Fresh was discussing Mkangisa’s drinking and driving arrest video when had gone viral on social media the weekend before the interview.
A listener accused Fresh of condoning Mkangisa’s acts, which he did not appreciate.
Another listener, Daniel Mokwa who heard the defamatory isiZulu word usage reported him to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) who requested that SABC take disciplinary action against the presenter.
The public have slammed the suspension and many are threatening to boycott the station if Fresh is not reinstated.
