Stellenbosch gym pulls out of masturbation case

Virgin Active has withdrawn the case of sexual assault against the 18-year-old gym member who was filmed allegedly masturbating in a Stellenbosch outlet.

In a statement on Thursday the gym company said that the teenager is receiving counselling and it was deemed that psychological assistance would be more appropriate than criminal punishment.

EWN reported that Virgin Active’s spokesperson Carla White said that while they feel what he did was wrong they believe that the best way to deal with the situation is for him to continue with counselling.

The gym can not control the behaviour of it’s members but it can take action where necessary, she said. In this instance the member has been banned for life.

The teenager was expected to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrates Court on Thursday where specific conditions might have been outlined following the withdrawal.
