The Educators’ Union of South Africa (EUSA) is wanting teachers to be allowed to take guns to school in order to protect themselves.
The request follows the death of Sboniso Nyawose, 48, who was a teacher at Masuku Primary School in Folweni, south of Durban.
The Star reported that a suspect managed to gain unauthorized access to the school despite there being a security guard on duty.
He entered the school at around 9am and shot the 48-year-old teacher in the head and abdomen while he was walking down the passage.
The reason for the shooting is unknown and currently under investigation.
The EUSA president Scelo Bhengu said that teacher do not deserve to be killed in this manor and it is time that teachers’ unions allow teachers to protect themselves with guns.
