Woman arrested for abducting and selling newborn baby for R2,500

The family of the woman whose newborn baby was allegedly abducted from Chris Hani Baragwariath Hospital intend on taking action as soon as she is discharged.

Bikokuhle Hlatshwayo, 24, gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday after being transferred from Orange Farm Clinic.  She was eight months pregnant and was experiencing complications.

On Thursday during visiting hours, between 2pm and 3pm, a 35-year-old woman whose name has not been released, stole the baby.

The baby was found on Friday, less than 5 kilometres from the hospital at a house in Diepkloof and after DNA tests were conducted, returned to the mother unharmed.

Police informed the mother that the baby had been sold for R2,500.

The woman has been arrested and is due to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s court on Monday.
