Forest High murder accused granted R5,000 bail

The Grade 11 pupil from Forest High School in Johannesburg who face charges of murder and attempted murder after stabbing fellow pupils was granted R5,000 bail.

Protesters who gathered outside the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court were angered that Muhammad Mawela was released.

The 19-year-old has been ordered not to enter the high school or Turfontein until the trial has been finalised.

Mawela was arrested last week after allegedly stabbing a Grade 8 learner, Daniel Bakwela to death and injuring two others boys.

Mwela’s sister told media that her brother had only been defending himself.

It is unclear what arrangements have been made for Mawela to complete his exams which he was in the process of writing when he was arrested.

The case will continue next month.
