Following two reports of doctors being accosted at Bloemfontein hospital last week, the University of the Free State has suspended the training of medical students for safety reasons.
A medical intern at Pelonomi Hospital fought off an attacker when he tried to rape her while on duty.
The School of Clinical Medicine have suspended training while they conduct an inquiry into the safety and security at the facility.
Despite security being increased, on Saturday an attacker attempted to rob a female doctor in the parting area at gunpoint but ran off when security guards approached him.
The Free State Health Department’s Mondli Mvambi said that the hospital security plan is under review and if the tactical response unit are forced to carry guns, then that’s what they will do.
