A school cannot judge if learner is too old

Basic Education Department announced that all learners are entitled to an education and schools are not allowed to kick them out regardless of their age.

The announcement follows the incident which occurred at the Forest High School in the South of Johannesburg on Monday, which saw a 20-year-old Grade 11 pupil allegedly stab and kill an 18-year-old Grade 8 pupil.

The policy of progression ensures that no learner will spent more than two years in the same grade.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder as well as two cases of attempted murder.

The department’s Elijah Mhlanga said that the school can only support the learner and ensure that they have access to education, they are not allowed to judge if the pupil is too old for the grade.
