Alleged robber beaten and burnt in Daveyton

Police are investigating the burnt body of a man in the Qalabusha informal settlement in Ekurhuleni after residents take the law into their own hands.

SowetanLIVE reported that according to Sargent Constance Moalusi, the mob beat the man near the Metrorail train station after he allegedly tried to rob individuals who were walking to the station during the early hours of Monday morning.

A resident called the police to the scene, who then discovered the mans body under flaming tyres.

An eyewitness told police that she heard noises near her shack and when she investigated she saw a group of people beating the alleged robber before necklacing him with the tyre and setting him alight.

The incident has been condemned by Daveyton police station commander, Lt-Col Kasivan Chittiah and a manhunt for the perpetrators is underway.

The mans body was burnt beyond recognition and has not yet been identified.
