Following growing concerns over the damaging affect Airbnb is having on the tourism sector, government will start regulating it’s operations in South Africa.
The Tourism Amendment Bill which was published on April 12 states that short-term home rentals will be legislated under the Tourism Act.
The Department of Tourism told Business Tech that the bill will regulate the platform.
Prior to the bill there was no legislation that stipulated who responsibility fell on which created a free-for-all with many unregistered accommodation establishments advertising on Airbnb causing a loss of bookings to legitimate businesses, and killing the industry.
The bill will give rise to a series of regulations such as the duration of the stay, the proposed charges and zoning.
The zoning will ensure that there is a certain distance between each establishment with the idea of keeping Airbnb properties away from hotels.
