Hawks arrest Matlala outside Johannesburg commercial crime court

In a dramatic arrest on Tuesday, businessman Nico Matlala was caught by the Hawks while in court for another case.

The North West Hawks’ serious commercial crime unit swooped on Matlala at the Johannesburg specialised commercial crime court where he was facing charges of fraud with Standard Bank.

The 41-year-old was arrested yesterday for allegedly defrauding the Matlosana Municipality in July 2016 for over R1.8-million.

The money was paid to Matlala despite him not rendering any services to the municipality.

He appeared briefly in the Klerksdorp magistrate’s coourt on fraud charges and the case was remanded to March 20 for bail application.

The arrest was apparently a second attempt at the courts.  He was possibly tipped off as shortly after court was adjourned Matlala tried to run, but police caught him.
