Union threatens to down-tools at Eskom over unbundling

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said in a statement on March 12 that should Eskom go ahead with the split into three entities they will strike.

The potential unbundling of the power utility has caused anger with the shop stewards who say that the African National Congress (ANC) are not giving solid answers with regards to what this means for workers.

NUM said Eskom needs to explain what the split means to thousands of poor employees as it seems there is no guarantee to prevent retrenchments.

BusinessTech reported that If no explanation is received, a march will be planned to the ANC’s Luttuli House on March 30.

They have stated that all Eskom board members should resign with immediate effect and the IPPs and PPA contracts should be terminated immediately.

NUM said workers are threatening to down-tools in the run-up to the national elections from May 3 until the election date, May 8.
