The South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC) explained to the national assembly portfolio committee on Tuesday that their dire financial situation could result in the non payment of March salaries.
Time Live reported that the broadcaster presented a document to parliament expressing the possible reality of a broadcast shut-down as they are facing factual insolvency by the end of March should funding not be made available.
The financial strain on the broadcaster has also brought various local productions to cease. Some of these are soapies which bring in much needed advertising revenue.
According to Group CEO Madoda Mxakwe, without a cash injection to pay salaries and and outstanding payments the broadcaster is in serious danger of a factual insolvency.
