Category 4 cyclone will start heading for Mozambique today

A red alert has been sent out regarding the  powerful tropical cyclone which is expected to reach central Mozambique by Thursday March 14 but heavy rains and flooding has already taken the lives of at least 23 people.

Named Idai by Meteo France, the storm intensified off the western coast of Madagascar before turning south and then westwards of the Mozambique Channel, having already killed 23 people in Malawi, injuring around 29 and 12 are still missing.

It will weaken when it impacts landfall but this category 4 storm is said to have reached 185 kilometres per hour yesterday and is said to be picking up momentum quickly.

It does appear the storm will remain small in diameter which means impact may be minimal
