Protesting students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus held the cast and theatre-goers hostage at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on Friday night.
According The Highway Mail report, around 200 students stopped the show toward the end of act one and demanded that the University give them accommodation.
The chief executive officer of MobiClaw, Mike Myers said that two of their clients were attending the show and alerted the control room. Police were then alerted and dispatched to the scene.
Most of the patrons were pensioners, and they were assisted into the change rooms for safety.
A Facebook post explained that the students pounded on the glass doors of the theatre demanding that the show be stopped.
The audience waiting inside the theatre for around 20 minutes, but as the situation appeared to be worsening, the cast moved the entire audience, including a paraplegic in a wheelchair, downstairs to the dressing rooms where they all waited for around two-hours for police to handle the situation.
As the safety of theatre-goers cannot be guaranteed at The Sneddon, all shows have been cancelled at the venue. They have however secured other venues and if you have purchased a ticket, please contact the theatre for more details.
