The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) began an investigation into corruption within the South African Police Services (SAPS) at the beginning of this year. Recently, IPID has returned to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) to detail several high profile corruption cases within SAPS, including that of former commissioner Khomotso Phlahlane. Phlahlane is accused of corruption that cost R5 billion.
North West deputy commissioner Major General Ntebo “Jan” Mabula has also been accused of both murder and torture. In addition to these high profile cases, nine members of the North West province’s former Organized Crime Unit have been accused of heinous crimes, as well.
