The community has taken the law into their own hands. Spaza shops around the country are being looted and attacked due to the selling of inauthentic and expired goods. Spaza shoppers across South Africa have been investigating the authenticity and condition of goods purchased at various spaza shops- only to find that the goods aren’t genuine or are in poor condition.
As a result, shoppers have been blaming spaza shop owners- largely foreign nationals- for risking their health and safety. In response to the spaza shop attacks, the ANC has said, in part, “We call on the people not to take the law into their own hands and further encourage them to report such incidences to relevant authorities.”
