The conversations around land expropriation without compensation have given some low-income South Africans the wrong impression. Although the land expropriation bill has not yet been passed, some citizens believe that they will be given free land by the government. Because of this, they haven’t been investing into property.

In Gauteng alone, the affordable housing market has dropped 40% since the end of June. All around the country, there have been invasions of affordable housing units and some refusals to pay rental fees because renters believe they will soon get housing for free.
