Towards the end of Jacob Zuma’s presidency, the truth about the Gupta family came to light. While the Guptas used to be untouchable, there are now several investigations underway to determine the exact nature of their corruption. Brothers Ajay and Atul Gupta are under particular scrutiny due to Ajay’s close relationship with Duduzane Zuma.
However, the whereabouts of the Gupta family are currently unknown. It is theorised that they are hiding in either Dubai or India. Investigations have continued and as they have intensified, former friends have been abandoning the Gupta family left and right.
Malusi Gigaba, the current South Africa Home Affairs minister, has been called to the stand to explain why he gave the Gupta family residence in South Africa. By all accounts, he seems prepared to snitch on his former friends to save himself. Ashu Chwala and Nazeem Howa are two other former friends and business associates of the Gupta family who have been called to the stand. They are both expected to tell some unsavory truths about the family.
Even a good friend of the Gupta family, Mzwanele Manyi, has turned his back on them the New Age newspaper and ANN7 television show they purchased for him has crashed and burned.
Manyi’s quote about the Gupta family sums up how many of their former friends now view them; “Even if you place a bottle of milk near the Guptas, it will turn sour.” One thing is for sure, when the Gupta family returns to South Africa, they will have many questions to answer and very few friends to support them.
