This Wednesday, South Africans will participate in a countrywide march against gender-based violence. In recent years, there has been a strong push from the public to convict those guilty of abuse against women and children. The Police Department has said that, since January of this year, 217 abusers have been handed life sentences for these crimes.
These convictions- and hefty sentences- send the message to abusers that these crimes will be taken seriously and punished accordingly. Reneilwe Serero of the South African Police Service (SAPS) has said, “We’re very much committed to ensuring that South Africa becomes a safer place for women, children and the vulnerable until they feel safe.”
