Officials in the Thaba Chweu Municipality in Mpumalanga have been using public funds for private use. A report by Auditor-General and Audit and Risk Management Solutions confirms that, since 2011, the municipality has spent R359.7m in public funds.
The municipality was recently forced to release the report, which was completed in May 2018, to the public. Here are some of the ways that the municipality has spent the money: buying houses for officials, paying companies for work not done, paying companies five times what they were owed, and more. Residents have said that the municipality acts more like the ANC leaders’ personal ATM.
