The Public Works Department has already recovered R30 million from lease agreements it made with private landlords. However, government officials estimate that close to R1BN will be recovered in total. The leases with private landlords include unlawful agreements, such as ghost rentals.
While 250 corruption cases have been probed into, 193 of them have been dismissed with nothing more than a verbal warning. Nonetheless, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi defends the success of these interventions while taking a realistic stance: “It’s not going to happen overnight and not without a massive struggle against the state capture forces.”
