Eskom has planned electricity supply disruptions in the Tokologo, Masilonyana and Nala municipalities in the Free State and has threatened to disconnect their power completely. The councils of these Free State municipalities owe a significant debt to Eskom. They were meant to make a payment last Friday on July 13th, but failed to do so.
Eskom’s entire municipality debt has now reached R13 billion and the company is taking action against those who have failed to pay back their debts. In regards to the Free State municipalities, Eskom has said that they “may, upon fifteen calendar days’ notice, serve the right to disconnect electricity entirely and indefinitely should the electricity debt situation not improve.”
