Hundreds of Haniville, Copesville and Sobantu residents have grown tired of waiting for low-cost housing and have taken matters into their own hands. Starting on Saturday, they began occupying a Msunduzi municipality-owned vacant field in Haniville, using glass and bottles to demarcate spaces for their shacks.
“It is against the law and unacceptable. They must be aware that once they set up a structure, some will face the law. The municipality police are monitoring the situation,” said municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha.
According to the municipality, a housing development is set to begin construction on the field next year.
