Johannesburg to Turn 71 Abandoned Properties Into Low-Income Housing.

As part of their efforts to revive the Inner City, the City of Johannesburg will be converting 71 properties into high-quality housing for the poor. These city-owned properties are mostly buildings that had been abandoned or hijacked, but will now be used for good.

The city’s Inner City Housing Implementation Plan aims to use public-private partnerships to level the playing field of the housing market so that it can also benefit the poor. Mayor Herman Mashaba is passionate about the project: “We will turn the Inner City into the heartbeat of Jozi, a place of opportunity for all our residents.”
