Former President Jacob Zuma has been directly accused of being involved in the South African Revenue Service (SARS) scandal for the first time.
Ivan Pillay, former SARS deputy head, recently provided written testimony that blamed the SARS overhaul on Zuma’s hushed 2013 decision to replace specific SARS executives with his own while ignoring due process. He also made allegations that Zuma was responsible for prompting the State Security Agency to investigate SARS, which led to false rumors about a SARS rogue unit.
If true, this could have significant consequences for both Zuma and the future of SARS.
