Western Cape Government tackles housing issue with plans in the pipeline.

CAPE TOWN – 74 000 housing opportunities are in the pipeline over the next few years.

The Western Cape Human Settlements Department officials have come under fire after recent protests have swept through the region. The relevant officials have met with all 25 municipalities in the province to discuss a way forward.

Violent protests have been seen during the past few weeks in Hermanus, Mitchells Plain, Ocean View, Gaansbaai, Gugulethu, Du Noon, Vrygrond, Ocean View and Gugulethu.

Protesters have have become violent in voicing their concerns over lack of housing.

The department says it is unable to prioritize land invaders as opposed to those having been on the housing database for years.

Also noted was the department stated it can only provide 18 000 housing opportunities per year.
